Imaginary Maps

unique edition, wet cyanotype, sunlight/ wet sand /washed out in the sea.

This work is a series of experiments, of creating maps and journeys, both real and imagined, literal and emotional, with wet cyanotype. The physical process of creating an image by exposure through sun light and ‘fixing’ in water, by being washed out in the sea becomes particularly resonant in relation to contemporary experiences of forced migration. Initially drawn to creating cyanotypes of found newspaper images relating to the migration crisis in Europe in 2014-15, I began to actively create this body of work, significant and symbolic maps of journeys and maps, enjoying the speed at which I had to work while the exposure was happening in real time. The process is captured digitally on a mobile phone, adding another layer of conversation between the analogue and the digital.
